Disclosures, is a body of work which will go on exhibition for the first time and centers around the early months of my time in Florence, when I found myself in the city, during the second lockdown in 2020. The work will be shown within the gallery of The Golden View, overlooking the Ponte Vecchio and Vasari's Corridor, exactly the neighbourhood where I found myself during those months. This exhibition also tells a larger story, for these pieces, will be exhibited alongside 3 pieces from one of our new projects, Reimagining the Grand Tour. This project takes us on a journey on the steps of The Grand Tour of Italy, stepping and learning from the travellers of the past to understand how that may inform the modern-day traveller of our times. When I walked those empty streets in 2020, void of tourists, it was clear to me then and even more so now, that tourism is part of the culture now, a part which has many good points, but our observations are speaking to the pulse of the city and the voice of the true culture which may be drowning in some ways under the burden of it. The question we would like to address here is where can we learn to be more aware of the culture of this country, as travellers how can we experience the culture in a true and authentic way, a way which also protects it. The main words I find now are how can we learn not only to be tourists but to be travellers again. These images give voice to the artworks in their original context, without the gaze of tourists and this is how they came to life for me during those silent months as I witnessed the city alive within its own air once again.
The works will be on display from 19th September until 19th November at The Golden View, Via dei Bardi, Firenze.
