NOTES FROM A
TRAVELLER

Welcome to the  journal and notes of Grace Lambert-Phillips.

Grace started writing when she was around 8 years old, and wrote her first short story, typed and illustrated, from her bedroom floor. She became a traveller around the same time, even though for a while it was only in her stories until she was big enough to explore the world. Now she is living in Italy writing about her travels, discoveries and adventures. Sometimes she still writes from a floor, but more often she writes from her studio in Tuscany or on the move at some table somewhere. But the important thing, she realised a long time ago, was always to write and do it wherever she was.

GRAND TOUR SOUVENIRS - NOTES FROM A TRAVELLER

Announcing a new exhibition opening this week at Fondazione Palazzi: Grand Tour Souvenirs: Notes from a traveller

We are pleased to announce our upcoming exhibition to be held at Fondazione Palazzi, located at Via Ricasoli 21, one of the distinguished venues of Florence University of the Arts (FUA-AUF). The exhibition will showcase a selection of my work alongside artifacts reminiscent of the Grand Tour. Although the display will be brief—lasting only 20 days—the message we wish to share is timeless. This message is of particular significance to me, especially at this moment.

Today, the trend of fast-paced, “bite-and-go” tourism often overshadows a more meditative, almost introspective approach to travel. My photographs serve as an invitation to embrace a slower journey, to rediscover the beauty of exploration, to uncover hidden corners and lesser-known places, ready to reveal themselves to a discerning audience with the sensitivity and care of a parent.

Traveling through Italy still has much to teach us—lessons that remain vital. The landscapes of the Chianti region, captured in my images, stand as a bastion of human authenticity, one of the last places where the primal essence of human nature can blend with the refined pleasures of life.

With an annual student body of over 5,000, FUA- AUF is a significant cultural resource, offering educational programs to students from around the world. I hope that the students who visit this exhibition—our travellers of the future—will, with the guidance of our young curators, find a moment to pause, step away from the rush of a city brimming with transient tourism, and deepen their understanding of Tuscany’s significance, its Renaissance spirit, and its enduring soul.

The exhibition will be open from 14th November to 4th December. We look forward to welcoming visitors to engage with the introspective nature of the work and invite them to collaborate with us in exploring the question: "What does travel mean to you?"
